‘Jailor’ crosses 100 cr mark in two days, estimated to earn over 500 cr

New Delhi (IANS). Superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailor’ is doing wonders at the box office.

Early estimates suggested that the film would earn over Rs 25 crore. The film has crossed that mark by earning over Rs 100 crore in just two days. Lifetime earning is estimated to exceed Rs 500 crore.

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala told IANS that the Rs 100-crore opening wasn’t a complete surprise as ‘Jailor’ was expected to do well in the five southern states, especially Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Telugu-speaking states.

Karnataka has also contributed well. But, it mainly consists of Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu states.

Talking about the expected weekend collection of the film, Ramesh Bala said, “Look, I expect the collection to reach Rs 275 crore by the end of Sunday night, till Monday.”

Ramesh Bala was asked if the Tamil film would be able to maintain this stupendous momentum. To this he said yes, there will be Monday and Tuesday, especially Tuesday because it is Independence Day. I expect it to slow down a bit on Wednesday, but it will pick up again on Thursday and Friday and will remain so for quite some time.

When asked about the reasons behind the huge success of the film, he said, “Jailer has a huge market in South, and even in USA, Canada, Europe, UK, UAE, Gulf States, Malaysia There is also a large international market in countries such as Indonesia. Some of the other big markets include Hong Kong, China and some other southeast countries as well.”

However, another big international market for Superstar is Japan. He said that it is true, Rajinikanth is a big face in Japan, but the film is yet to release there. The film’s release is delayed, and their screenings will be limited, but it will do quite well there.

On the lifetime collection of the film, he said, “As of now based on the figures I am expecting the lifetime collection to be around Rs 500 crore, it may go beyond that, but by how much, I cannot say now.”

When asked if the film would be as big a hit as films like ‘Pathan’ or ‘RRR’ and enter the Rs 1000 crore club, he said, “I doubt it. You see these films had a worldwide appeal, whereas ‘Jailor’ is mostly a southern audience film with select international markets.”

Ramesh Bala was asked if ‘Gadar 2’ would beat ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ and become the highest grossing Tamil film of 2023. To this he said that according to my estimation I would say yes. ‘PS 2’ did very well, not as well as expected, but very well nonetheless.

But, when this was combined with the face of Rajinikanth and his fame in the South, ‘Jailor’ became the biggest Tamil film of the year. Things are a bit uncertain right now as markets are volatile, but the potential is clearly there.
