Jalandhar: Shooters win medals in Asian Skeet Shooting Championship
Jalandhar: Harmehar Singh Lali, a student of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, recently brought laurels to the college by winning a medal at the 16th Asian Skeet Shooting Championship held in Kazakhstan. Lali, a fifth-semester Bachelor of Design student, won gold medals in the Skeet Shooting Junior Team (Men) and Skeet Shooting Junior Mixed Team events, as well as a silver medal in the Skeet Shooting Junior Men Individual category. His performance has not only brought laurels to the college but also made his parents proud. Lali learned shooting from his father, Jagdish Singh, a resident of Chuharwali village near here.
His father said, “I learned this skill from my father, who was a hunter. When hunting was banned, I continued shooting as a sport. Harmehar is the third generation in our family to take up shooting. He was just 12 years old when he started shooting with an air rifle.” He added, “Now, Lali uses a .12 bore shotgun.” Lali’s mother, Amanpreet Kaur, said that her son is balancing sports and studies very well. She said, “He practices throughout the year, but when exams approach, he starts focusing on studies. I don’t have to push him for anything. He is completely self-motivated. In sports, he has already won nine gold, five silver, and three bronze medals.”
Lali is receiving training from PP Singh. Previously, he trained at former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s shooting center in Patiala. There is no other skeet shooting training center in Punjab. Seeing his son’s achievements, Lali’s father built a personal range for him. Previously, while representing his team at the International Sports Shooting Federation Junior World Cup in New Delhi, Lali finished fourth. College Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra congratulated Harmehar Singh Lali for his achievements. He wished her success in skeet shooting and hoped she would continue to make the country proud in international events. He also praised the efforts of Sahil Mahe, faculty member of the Physical Education Department, who guided and mentored Lali, helping her achieve success.
