New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department informed on Saturday that the pressure area over the south-western Bay of Bengal may turn into a deep depression during the next 12 hours and then turn into a cyclonic storm by December 3.
According to an IMD release, the depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 9 kmph and lay centered over the same area at around 11.30 pm on December 1, 2023.
“It is very likely to intensify into a deep depression during the next 12 hours and into a cyclonic storm over southwest Bay of Bengal by December 3. Thereafter, it will move north-westwards and reach near South Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu coasts by December. 4 a.m.,” the release said.
“Subsequently, it will move almost parallel to the north and close to the South Andhra Pradesh coast and cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the morning of December 5 as a cyclonic storm, with a maximum speed of 80- Will be 90 km per hour. Up to 100 kmph,” it added.
IMD has also issued a wind warning over south-east Bay of Bengal.
According to the release, wind speed ranging from 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is likely to prevail over southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours and is likely to reduce thereafter.
Speaking to ANI, Sunanda, Managing Director, Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, said, “Winds and rain will increase over north Tamil Nadu coast and south Andhra coast from December 3. When it is moving, it will start raining. Therefore there will be light rain.” “Moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls likely over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh.”
He said the low pressure area has now turned into a depression near the south-east and adjoining areas after observation. Therefore, in the next 24 hours it has further intensified into a deep depression. Then in the next 24 hours it will turn into a cyclonic storm.
“Intensifying, it is moving towards north-west direction and is moving towards north-west direction and reaching near North Tamil Nadu and Andhra coast,” the MD said.
“This system will pass between Machilipatnam and Chennai and is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall in all coastal districts,” he said.
According to the IMD, intensity of rainfall over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will increase from December 3 with isolated falls at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places. There is a possibility of rain at most places with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places on December 4 and it will reduce thereafter.
Moderate rain with moderate rain and lightning is likely at isolated places over more than five districts of Tamil Nadu, including Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, light to moderate rain with light thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places over Villupuram, Ranipet, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Ramanathapuram, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Pudukottai, Virudhunagar Nilgiris and It is likely to happen. Coastal Andhra Pradesh will receive light to moderate rainfall at most places, heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on December 3 and 4, the IMD said.
The IMD release said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh. Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh on 5 December.
Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is predicted over Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh on December 3 and 4.
In Odisha, IMD has predicted light to moderate rain at most places with heavy rainfall at a few places over south coastal and adjoining south interior Odisha on December 4 and at isolated places over the same region on December 5. There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain.
