Karukka Vinod, who threw petrol bomb near Raj Bhavan gate, detained under Goonda Act

CHENNAI: The city police has invoked the Goondas Act against M Vinod (42) alias Karukka Vinod, who was arrested two weeks ago for throwing Molotov cocktails (petrol bombs) outside Raj Bhavan, the residence of Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi.

As far as throwing Molotov cocktails – colloquially known as petrol bombs – is concerned, Vinod is a serial offender.

Although the police have not clarified the reasons for his act, officials said he has been arrested twice before for similar acts, one of which was for throwing petrol bombs at the Teynampet police station.

On October 25, around 3 pm, the accused came armed with four Molotov cocktails and threw one from the Highway Research Center building opposite Raj Bhavan Gate. It fell short of the barricades in front of the gate and caused no damage. He was immediately secured and taken into custody. Police recovered three more bottles from him.

Two years ago, Vinod was arrested for throwing petrol bombs outside Kamalalayam, the Tamil Nadu BJP headquarters. Vinod was also detained under the Goondas Act in 2017 when he was arrested for throwing petrol bombs at Teynampet police station.

Police said Vinod is a history-sheeter who is involved in several other criminal cases.

Police said that Vinod prepares petrol bombs on demand. He had committed a similar crime on August 12, 2015, when he threw a Molotov cocktail at a Tasmac shop on South Boag Road in T Nagar.
