Lahaul-Spiti MLA lays foundation stone of open-air stage at Kaza
In a major step toward preserving and promoting Spiti’s rich cultural heritage, Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana yesterday laid the foundation stone for an open-air cultural stage in Kaza, the headquarters of the Spiti subdivision. The project, estimated to cost ₹1.12 crore, was initiated by the Spiti Development Block under the Himachal Pradesh Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department.
The foundation stone laying ceremony was held with traditional rituals combining Vedic and Buddhist rites. The religious ceremony was led by the monastery head, Venerable Tenzing Lobzang Duldup, in the presence of MLA Anuradha Rana. Local elected representatives, Buddhist monks, and people from across the region attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, Rana stated that preserving Spiti’s unique cultural identity and promoting its traditional heritage is a key priority of the government. He stated that the open cultural stage will provide a unique platform for local artists, youth, and cultural organizations to showcase the region’s folk music, dance, traditional performances, and other cultural activities.
He added that the new venue will also enhance the visitor and tourist experience by allowing them to witness and appreciate Spiti’s unique cultural traditions. According to the MLA, strengthening cultural infrastructure is as important as improving physical infrastructure in tribal areas, and the state government is committed to supporting both sectors simultaneously.
Rana further stated that once completed, the open-air cultural stage will serve as a central venue for local fairs, cultural festivals, religious gatherings, and community events. It is hoped that this facility will encourage greater youth participation in traditional arts, as well as create a vibrant space for cultural exchange and social interaction. Residents welcomed the initiative, calling it an important milestone for the area. He expressed confidence that the project will play a vital role in preserving Spiti’s traditional arts, customs, and cultural practices, as well as inspiring the younger generation to stay connected to their heritage.
The upcoming cultural stage is expected to become a significant landmark in Kaza, strengthening the region’s cultural landscape and contributing to the long-term preservation and celebration of Spiti’s unique traditions.
