Lebanese president condemns journalist’s death in Israeli attack

Beirut: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Saturday condemned the Israeli attack in southern Lebanon that killed a journalist from Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV and another journalist from the Hezbollah-supporting Al-Mayadeen channel.

“Once again, the Israeli attack violates the most basic rules of international law, international humanitarian law, and the laws of war by targeting journalists, who are ultimately civilians carrying out their professional work,” Aoun said in a statement issued on behalf of the president.

“This is a blatant crime that violates all rules and treaties that provide international protection to journalists in conflict.”

A military source told AFP that three Lebanese journalists, including a reporter for a Hezbollah-affiliated outlet, were killed in an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon on Saturday.

Al-Shouaib of Hezbollah’s channel al-Manar and Fatima Fatuni of al-Mayadeen, who were considered close to the Iran-backed movement, were killed in Jezzine, along with Fatuni’s brother, a cameraman, the source said.

Al-Mayadeen and al-Manar confirmed the deaths of their journalists.
