Assam: Giriraj Singh stresses on textile development in Guwahati

Guwahati: Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated the National Textile Ministers’ Conference 2026 in Guwahati, Assam on Thursday, stating that the central government is committed to preserving India’s textile heritage while accelerating industry-driven growth.

Singh, along with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, also inaugurated a handloom and handicraft exhibition during the conference. Union Minister of State for Textiles Pavitra Margherita participated in the event. The exhibition showcases traditional crafts from across the country and aims to showcase the income and employment potential of India’s artisan sector.

The two-day conference in Assam is focusing on promoting investment in the textile sector, job creation, innovation, skill development, and inter-state cooperation. The discussions will focus on handloom, handicrafts, modern textiles, readymade garments, technical textiles, and export potential, with an emphasis on promoting overall industry growth.

Speaking on the occasion, Yadav said that Madhya Pradesh will engage with the Assam government on cooperation in wildlife conservation and species exchange. He said that an in-principle agreement has already been reached between the two states to reintroduce the endangered wild buffalo in Madhya Pradesh and to introduce rhinoceros to the state. At the request of Assam wildlife officials, proposals to transfer tigers and crocodiles from Madhya Pradesh to Assam are also being considered and have been submitted to the central government for approval.

Yadav said that cooperation between Madhya Pradesh and Assam is expected to increase in eco-tourism and wildlife tourism, and these issues will be discussed during the visit of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

During the conference, Madhya Pradesh will also present its textile policy, investment opportunities, and industrial ecosystem to participating states and industry representatives. The event is expected to promote the exchange of best practices and explore new partnership models across the textile value chain.
