Liquor to be sold in tetra packs in Odisha

Odisha: The Odisha government announced that liquor will now be sold in tetra packs along with glass bottles, marking a major shift in the state’s excise policy.
Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan informed the Assembly that tetra packs, similar to fruit juice packaging, will serve as an alternative to glass bottles. He explained that the move reduces dependence on glass and promotes safer, environment-friendly packaging solutions.
The minister emphasised that tetra packs align with the government’s sustainability goals. He said the packaging change supports environmental protection and ensures safer handling and disposal of liquor containers.
Responding to a question from Champua legislator Sanatan Mahakud, Harichandan clarified that the government encourages the recycling of glass bottles wherever they continue to be used. He added that institutions and individuals should actively promote reuse and recycling to minimise environmental hazards.
Officials believe the introduction of tetra packs will reduce risks associated with broken glass, improve convenience for consumers, and contribute to eco-friendly practices. The excise policy revision reflects Odisha’s broader commitment to sustainable development.
The government expects the new packaging option to balance consumer safety with environmental conservation. Liquor sales in tetra packs will soon become available across the state, offering a practical alternative to traditional glass bottles.
