Mamta Banerjee criticized the Center
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the central government over Indian Railways’ “skyrocketing” passenger fares as well as alleged inadequate passenger safety.
In a message posted on her official X handle, Banerjee pointed out that fares in some categories of trains are even higher than flight rates.
“Sad to know that railway passenger fares are increasing drastically and even in Suvidha trains, fares are sometimes higher than air fares!! Where will the common people go in case of emergency?” Read the message.
Seeking to curb and reduce fare hike, the Chief Minister said that attention should be paid to safety and security issues.
In her message, Banerjee also compared her tenure as Railway Minister.
“During my tenure as Railway Minister, I had introduced anti-collision devices and other anti-accident measures. Why are they not being used to prevent the increasing number of rail accidents while the anti-people fare system continues unchecked?” Read his message.
Banerjee has been critical of Indian Railways, especially on the issue of passenger safety, since a train crash in Odisha’s Balasore district in June killed 296 people.
He had also visited the accident site near Bahanaga Bazar railway station and alleged that the project for introduction of anti-collision devices, initiated during his tenure as Railway Minister, has not progressed even a bit.
