Manipur CM expresses concern over the performance of Mizo students in the national exam

Guwahati: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on December 17 raised concern over the declining performance of Mizo students in national-level competitive examinations, stating that they lag behind Scheduled Tribe candidates from other states despite Mizoram’s achievement of complete literacy.

Addressing the gathering at the inauguration of the winter-cum-cultural festival at Serchhip Government College, the Chief Minister said the weak showing in central competitive exams has resulted in several reserved government posts remaining vacant, depriving local youths of employment opportunities. He attributed the trend to a lack of motivation, determination, and perseverance among the younger generation.

Lalduhoma pointed out that although Mizoram became India’s first fully literate state in May, the milestone has yet to reflect in national academic and competitive success. He said eligible candidates either fail to qualify or do not come forward, allowing opportunities meant for Mizo youths to go unutilised.

The Chief Minister also highlighted measures to strengthen higher education in the state. He announced that the government would soon establish Mizoram State University and confirmed that academic sessions at Mizoram Engineering College in Lunglei are likely to commence next year.

On the employment front, Lalduhoma said the present government has created thousands of jobs through a transparent recruitment process based strictly on merit and qualifications. He reaffirmed the administration’s focus on farmers, noting that minimum support prices have been fixed for five cash crops.

Speaking on economic empowerment, he said the government is promoting self-reliance by providing project-based, interest-free loans under the ‘Bana Kaih’ handholding scheme.

The Chief Minister further said the state continues to strengthen its campaign against drug abuse and trafficking. As part of rehabilitation efforts, authorities have extended skill-based training to several youths rescued from addiction to help them secure sustainable livelihoods.
