Manipur: Congress MLAs walk out of the assembly

Imphal: Opposition Congress MLAs in Manipur on Friday walked out of the Assembly and decided to boycott the rest of the session. Congress Legislative Party leader Okram Ibobi Singh alleged that his party MLAs were not being allowed to raise relevant issues in the House. “There has been no solution to the crisis in the state for over 15 months. Earlier, we had urged the government to limit the nine meetings to three or four days and find a concrete solution by holding in-depth discussions on how to resolve the crisis as well as approach the Centre, particularly the Prime Minister, for intervention,” he said. “However, the government did not listen to our proposal. Today, we moved five private member motions seeking an appointment with the Prime Minister,” he said. Singh said all 60 MLAs of the state, including the 10 Kuki MLAs, should request to meet Prime Minister Modi. He said, “We wanted to approach the Prime Minister and seek his help, but the government is not listening. The people of Manipur also know whether the government can ask for an appointment with the Prime Minister or not. It seems that they cannot even ask for an appointment with the Prime Minister. So we moved a private member’s resolution, but the Speaker rejected it. So there is no need to attend the session.” The assembly session will end on August 12.
