Assam police have arrested a retired Air Force officer on suspicion of espionage

Guwahati: Assam Police have arrested a retired Indian Air Force officer in Sonitpur district on charges of leaking sensitive information to individuals suspected of having links to Pakistan.
The arrest, which took place on December 13, has raised fresh concerns about national security and the misuse of digital platforms by former defense personnel.
According to investigators, the accused allegedly shared confidential documents and strategic information through social media channels. Law enforcement officials believe this information reached individuals connected to Pakistani intelligence networks, prompting swift action by the police.
Additional Superintendent of Police Haricharan Bhumij stated that initial investigations revealed consistent electronic communication between the accused and individuals with foreign links.
During the arrest, police seized a laptop and a mobile phone suspected of being used in the exchange of this information.
Authorities have sent the seized devices for forensic analysis. However, investigators have found that some of the digital data has been erased, which may pose challenges during the analysis.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the information leak and identify any potential accomplices.
