Mastermind of 6 crore gold robbery arrested

New Delhi (IANS). The Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested the mastermind of the robbery of 10 kg gold worth Rs six crore from a Ludhiana-based jeweler in the national capital.

The accused has been identified as Sushil, a resident of Ludhiana. Sushil along with his accomplices duped Johri by posing as CGST officers. The police have also recovered eight kg gold worth about Rs 4.8 crore from the accused.

According to the police, the FIR was registered on the complaint of Ravindra Kumar, in which he said that he regularly bought gold from Delhi to make gold ornaments and sold it in the local market.

On July 10, he sent his driver Balraj and employee Rajan Bawa to take delivery of the gold from Delhi along with the GST bill. At around 9 pm, he left for Ludhiana (Punjab) in Ertiga car with gold delivery.

Harendra Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Outer Delhi, said that around 9:30 pm when they reached near Haryana Maitri Bhawan, near West Enclave, a white i20 car overtook them. Two unidentified persons came out of the car and introduced themselves as Inspectors of the Central GST Department.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police said that those who introduced themselves as inspectors of the GST department claimed that information about unauthorized gold was found in their car. Thereafter, both those persons asked for bills of 10 gold plates and took the gold asking the driver to come to their office of CGST.

Then, on July 11, Ravindra Kumar reached Delhi and personally visited the concerned office of the Central GST department. Kumar tries to find out the details and facts about those GST inspectors and their gold, but to no avail.

The officer said that since Rajan Bawa was not in touch with him (Kumar) since July 11, he had strong suspicion that Rajan, in connivance with some unknown persons posing as GST inspectors, had cheated him.

The DCP said that around 100 CCTV cameras were examined and analyzed. Apart from this, analysis of call details was also done. On the basis of technical surveillance, Sushil was arrested from Khanna in Punjab. At his instance, 8 out of 10 gold plates have been recovered from his house. The weight of each plate was one kilogram.

The officer said that during interrogation, Sushil told that he used to visit the GST office regularly. He had some knowledge about the functioning of GST officers. He has known Rajan for two years. He conspired with Rajan and some other persons to cheat the jeweler by posing as CGST officers.
