Member of ‘Munim Mewati’ gang arrested in Delhi, steals bike in one attempt
New Delhi (IANS). The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested a 29-year-old member of the Munim Mewati gang. The accused is notorious for carrying out incidents of bike theft in a single attempt especially in the area of South and Southeast Delhi.
Officials said the accused has been identified as Wasim, a resident of Palwal district of Haryana. Police have also recovered 16 stolen bikes from his possession. With Wasim’s arrest, 20 cases of motor vehicle theft in Delhi have been solved, the official said.
Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Singh Yadav said that due to increase in incidents of auto thefts in South and Southeast districts, special instructions were given to Southern Range of Crime Branch to curb these auto theft menace.
Ravindra Singh Yadav said that separate teams were formed and CCTV footage from around the crime scenes were analysed, which revealed the active involvement of the Munim gang. The gang entered Delhi in groups of four-five and stole several vehicles in one attempt.
Besides this, it was also learned that the gang members used to come to the city late at night and return early in the morning. During the analysis of CCTV footage, the accused were identified as Waseem and Munim. After persistent efforts and technical surveillance, the location of accused Waseem was traced in the nearby area of Mewat and later he was arrested.
On interrogation, Waseem disclosed that he along with Munim and other gang members used to steal vehicles in Delhi and sell them in Mewat. During the last one year, they have stolen more than 500 bikes from Delhi and Haryana. The accused also disclosed that several stolen bikes are still parked in Mewat, the officer said.
The officer recovered 16 stolen bikes from Mewat at the instance of the accused. The gang’s kingpin Munim has already been arrested in more than 70 auto theft cases, but one active member of the gang named Arshad is still absconding.
