Mohali: Public transport will have panic button for the safety of passengers

Mohali: The Punjab Government has taken action to make public transport safer for people, especially women and children. Recently, they signed an agreement with C-DAC, an IT company, to initiate this project.

Punjab Transport Secretary Dilraj Singh stated, “This initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring safer and more efficient public transportation for the people of Punjab. We aim to create a more secure environment for women and children and enhance passenger safety by leveraging technology.”

Under this project, all buses and taxis in Punjab would be equipped with panic buttons and GPS systems. This would enable vehicle tracking in the event of an emergency. If a woman is in trouble, she can press the panic button, and a message will immediately be sent to the Command Control Centre and the police, along with the vehicle’s location.

Although the project had been stalled for several months, a meeting between the transport department officials and C-DAC representatives has now brought hope. C-DAC ‘Suraksha Mitr’ platform will serve as the backbone of the control center, enabling real-time tracking of vehicles, monitoring panic buttons, analysing driving behaviour.
