A spell of continuous rain has begun across several parts of the state, and the Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in 10 districts, including Dehradun, for Wednesday. The capital, Dehradun, has been experiencing intermittent heavy rain since morning, disrupting normal life. Amidst the rainfall, the district administration has made a significant announcement regarding residents living in the Rispana River’s floodplain, clarifying that a massive anti-encroachment drive will be launched once the monsoon season concludes. A final warning notice has been issued to those who have not yet vacated their homes.
According to the Meteorological Department’s forecast, the rainy spell is likely to continue in several districts for some time. Heavy rainfall in hilly regions poses a risk of landslides, rockfalls, and road blockages, while the plains face the threat of waterlogging and rising water levels in rivers and drains. The administration has urged people to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.
Waterlogging was observed in several low-lying areas of Dehradun due to the rain that began in the morning. Traffic on major roads was also disrupted. Teams from the Municipal Corporation and the Disaster Management Department are monitoring drainage systems to prevent any major issues from arising.
Amidst the rains, the district administration has adopted a strict stance regarding encroachments in the Rispana River’s floodplain. Officials stated that a special drive to remove illegal structures built within the river’s natural flow path would be launched immediately after the monsoon ends. Final warning notices have been issued to individuals who have not yet removed their houses or structures.
The administration maintains that encroachments in the Rispana River’s floodplain impede drainage during the rainy season and increase the risk of flooding. Furthermore, such encroachments adversely affect the environmental balance and the river’s natural state. With this in mind, a plan has been formulated to clear the floodplain of encroachments. According to officials, if people do not remove encroachments voluntarily even after the final notice, administrative action will be taken to demolish illegal structures following the monsoon season. Coordination with relevant departments is currently underway for this purpose. Security arrangements and necessary resources will also be organized for the drive.
The administration has appealed to the affected individuals to voluntarily remove their structures within the stipulated timeframe to avoid any inconvenience later. Officials state that the operation will be conducted strictly within the legal framework and in accordance with established procedures.
Meanwhile, the state disaster management machinery has been placed on high alert due to the forecast of heavy rainfall. Relief and rescue teams in vulnerable districts have been instructed to remain prepared. River water levels are being constantly monitored, and local administrations have been directed to make necessary arrangements to handle any emergency situation.
Residents of hilly areas and travelers have been advised to exercise extra caution. People have been urged to avoid unnecessary movement in landslide-prone areas and to travel only after checking the latest weather updates. Additionally, those living along riverbanks and streams have been asked to be ready to move to safer locations should water levels rise.
