Mumbai: Light to moderate rain, red alert for heavy rain in next 48 hours

Mumbai: Light to moderate rain was recorded in Mumbai and its surrounding areas on Saturday morning. Although the intensity of the rain was slightly less than in the past few days, the city remained overcast and intermittent rain continued. Despite this, a red alert has been issued for Mumbai and surrounding districts, and the Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain over the next 48 hours.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the active monsoon system over the west coast remains strong, leading to persistent moisture and cloud cover over the coastal areas of Maharashtra. Due to this system, intermittent rain continued in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and several parts of the Konkan region.
Light to moderate rain was observed in various parts of the city on Saturday morning, causing waterlogging on roads in many areas and disrupting traffic movement. Although the rain was not very heavy, the constantly changing weather caused difficulties in commuting. People heading to work and shopping had to endure wet roads and slow traffic in the morning.
The Meteorological Department has reported that the weather has remained unstable for the past few days due to an active monsoon trough and a depression in the Arabian Sea. Consequently, coastal Maharashtra has been receiving light to moderate rainfall. The department says this system is expected to remain active for the next two days, potentially increasing the intensity of the rainfall.
In view of the red alert, the administration has advised citizens to remain vigilant. Those living in low-lying areas have been asked to be cautious about waterlogging. Municipal corporations and disaster management teams have also been put on alert to respond immediately in case of any emergency.
Dense clouds covered many parts of Mumbai since morning. Light showers accompanied by strong winds were also recorded in some areas. The weather in Thane and Palghar remained similar, with intermittent rain throughout the day. The Konkan region also experienced cloudy skies and light to moderate rain.
The local administration has appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel and monitor weather updates. Vigilance has been increased along the coastline as strong winds and high waves are expected. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea for the next few days.
The weather may also affect rail and road traffic. In view of the heavy rain warning, monitoring of local train services has been increased to ensure immediate response to any disruptions. Traffic police have also been deployed on major routes.
According to weather experts, this situation indicates an active monsoon phase, with moisture from the Arabian Sea continuously impacting the western coast. If this system strengthens, Mumbai and the Konkan region may experience more rainfall in the coming days.
In light of the red alert, the Disaster Management Department has activated a 24-hour control room. Teams have been placed on standby to provide immediate assistance in case of any emergency. Pumping systems are also being activated in waterlogged areas.
Overall, while the current forecast for Mumbai and surrounding areas is for light to moderate rain, the IMD has warned that the next 48 hours are crucial. With the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, both the administration and citizens need to remain vigilant.
