Nagaland: Short circuit will be the biggest cause of fire in Dimapur in 2025

Guwahati: 59 fire incidents were recorded in Dimapur, Nagaland, between January and December 2025, with short circuits being the primary cause, according to official fire station data.
These incidents caused property damage worth approximately ₹6.88 crore and affected over 500 families, while no deaths were reported.
Data collected from the Central and West fire stations revealed that non-Naga residents suffered the most, with most fires occurring in mud houses. April saw the highest number of fires, with nine incidents, followed by seven in October. Officials recorded only one incident in May, while there were no fires in June.
Fire officials said electrical faults were responsible for more than half of the incidents, with short circuits alone accounting for 26. Other causes included open flames, garbage burning, gas leaks, and unknown causes. Short-circuit-related fires have affected residential colonies, commercial spaces, and government institutions, raising growing concerns about electrical safety.

Between January and October, the vast majority of fires fell under the “unknown cause” category.

Officials stated that many incidents were caused by everyday human activities such as burning garbage, smoking meat, clearing bushes, cooking, using LPG cylinders, and arson or theft.

The Central Fire Station provided assistance to West Dimapur on four occasions and neighboring Assam on four more, indicating a significant level of emergency.

Data by cause showed that 24 fires were caused by unknown causes, six were related to open burning, two were caused by gas leaks, and one was a suspected case of arson or theft, bringing the total to 59. Based on severity, officials classified 28 incidents as major, four as medium, 25 as small, and two as forest fires.

In neighboring Chumoukedima district, officials reported about 20 fires during the same period, most of them forest or jungle fires. According to official records, these incidents caused approximately ₹29.6 million in property and environmental damage.
