Tamil Nadu: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical courses will be conducted this year on the coming Sunday, May 3rd. A large number of candidates from across the country are appearing for this examination, with the number of female students reportedly exceeding that of male students.

Through NEET, admissions are granted to All India Quota seats in government and private medical colleges for courses such as MBBS, BDS, Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, and Veterinary Science. Furthermore, the NEET examination has also been made mandatory for admission to B.Sc. Nursing courses in military colleges. This examination is conducted annually by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

This year, the examination will be held across 552 cities nationwide, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Additionally, examination centers have been established abroad, covering 14 foreign countries including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat, Riyadh, and Singapore.

A total of 2,279,743 candidates have applied for this examination. This includes 946,815 male students and 1,332,928 female students. Admissions to approximately 200,000 seats across the country will be determined based on this examination.

In Tamil Nadu, the NEET examination will be conducted in 30 cities, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Tirunelveli. The examination will be administered in 13 languages, with Tamil, English, and Hindi being the primary ones.

The NEET examination will consist of a total of 180 questions, carrying a maximum of 720 marks. Each question will carry 4 marks. The paper will include questions worth 360 marks from Biology—comprising Botany and Zoology—while questions worth 180 marks each will be asked from Physics and Chemistry.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has taken special measures to alleviate the mental stress faced by students. The government has stated that free counseling services are being made available to help maintain students’ morale and mental health during the examination period.

According to a government press release, under the ‘Friendship With You’ program, students are being provided with mental health counseling over the phone to alleviate exam-related stress and enable them to take the examination in a better mental state.

This move by the government is being viewed as a supportive initiative for students ahead of the exams, at a time when millions of candidates are engrossed in preparing for this crucial examination.
