NEP implementation for Class IX from new academic year: Sawant

PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said the state government will implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for Class IX from the academic year 2024-25.

“A meeting was held today to discuss how to implement NEP in Goa. It has been decided that NEP will be implemented from class IX. In view of this, three new subjects will be introduced – Vocational Studies, Interdisciplinary and Art. “It has been decided to provide training for vocational courses where there are no teachers,” Sawant said.

“Teaching for these courses will start from August itself after giving proper training to the teachers. There will be trouble for two months due to absence of teachers. Syllabus of interdisciplinary courses will be prepared and made available to schools. Arts teachers will be appointed through SCERT.
The Chief Minister also said that the Education Secretary and the Director of Higher Education will “properly brief the school principals”. “Everyone is requested to extend their cooperation. If NEP is implemented from this year, it will help in its implementation in higher classes,” Sawant said.

The Chief Minister said that the issue of primary, secondary and higher secondary schools was discussed in the meeting and it was decided that recruitment of 180 teachers would be done expeditiously.
“It has been decided to make SCERT an autonomous body,” he said. “Priority will be given to resolving those issues which have not been resolved yet,” he said.
The National Education Policy (NEP) released in July 2020 not only focuses on education but also gives equal importance to the overall development of students, which includes skill development and personality development.

In February this year, the Center issued a notice to all states/UTs to fix the minimum age for admission to Class I at six years from the 2024-25 academic year, in line with the NEP 2020 and the right of children to free and compulsory education. did. Education (RTE) Act, 2009. However, the Directorate of Education had said that it would seek relaxation from the Center on the minimum age for admission to Class I.
