New Chief Justice of India to be sworn in tomorrow
Justice SuryaKant will be sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India tomorrow. He will continue as the Chief Justice till February 9, 2027. In this case, Justice SuryaKant will be recognized as the first person from Haryana to take charge as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Justice Suryakant was born on February 10, 1962, in Hissar district of Haryana. He completed his degree in 1981. He obtained a law degree from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. He started practicing as an advocate in the Hissar District Court the same year. In 1985, he moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In 2001, he was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate.
He served as the Advocate General of the Punjab and Haryana High Court until his appointment as a judge on January 9, 2004. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018 and as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Justice Suryakant, who has served on various benches for two decades, has been involved in many key judgments.
Justice Suryakaanth was also on the bench that delivered the verdict on the abrogation of Article 370. He has also delivered key judgments on issues like freedom of speech, corruption, Bihar voters’ list, environment, and gender equality.
