News of heavy rain in Erode, Tiruppur and Coonoor areas

Erode: Several areas in Tamil Nadu state have been inundated after hours of heavy to moderate rainfall in the region. Due to heavy rain overnight, water entered houses and markets in low-lying residential areas of Erode district.

Around fifty houses in Annai Satya Nagar area of Erode were inundated with water after moderate to heavy rains yesterday midnight.

Heavy rains also caused waterlogging in residential areas of Tiruppur, especially in Avinasi area. Rain water as well as sewage entered houses in Gandhinagar, Mummamoorthy Nagar, Angaripalyam Road, Valipalayam Road and Agni areas under Tirupur Municipal Corporation.

Subsequently, Tiruppur Municipal Corporation Mayor Dinesh Kumar and Corporation Commissioner Pawan Kumar among others inspected the spot and heard the complaints of the public and expedited the work of disposal of rain water along with the corporation employees.

North Tiruppur region received 167 mm rainfall. The northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu has filled ponds and rivers resulting in waterlogging. Mountain train service was canceled due to landslides and falling of trees on the Ooty-Mettupalayam mountain railway line due to heavy rains in Coonoor area of Nilgiris district on Tuesday.

Southern Railway has announced that the mountain train service has been canceled due to incessant rains, as landslides and falling of trees can occur at any time on the mountain railway tracks. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an ‘orange alert’ for extremely heavy rainfall in Puducherry, Karaikal and Tamil Nadu, in view of which the Puducherry Education Minister declared holiday for schools in Puducherry.

“Orange alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal! Be prepared for heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) on November 22 and 23,” the IMD said in a post on Twitter on Tuesday. The deep easterly wave prevailing over Peninsular India may bring heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the next few days.

“At present, the Western Disturbance is weak but it is gradually moving eastwards. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to develop around November 23. We are expecting dark clouds over Northwest India around November 24-25. The weather will remain mild. We can expect that there will not be much change in the maximum and minimum temperatures,” Soma Sen, senior meteorologist at IMD, told ANI.
