Nirmal: People from all walks of life love to buy exquisite wooden toys from Nirmal. However, you can buy toys only if you visit the government-administered Nirmal or Golconda Handicraft City in Hyderabad. Now you will soon be able to buy toys online anywhere and anytime.

The district administration, which is looking for ways to support the artisans of Nirmal’s famous wooden toys, has recently formed a coordination committee. The committee comprising officials from the Forest and Industrial Departments and Rural Development Organization (DRDO) will prepare an action plan to promote the toys and support the artisans, who are facing financial crunch due to decline in sales. , especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. 19 epidemic.

“Nirmal’s wooden toys made by Nakashi artisans will soon be sold on electronic commerce portal Amazon. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between the artisans’ society and the portal in a month or two. Similarly, they cultivated ponik trees, the primary material used for toys, to overcome the shortage of wood”, K Vijayalakshmi, a committee member and director of the project, Nirmal DRDO, said in ‘Telangana Today’ .

After the signing of the MOU, the self-help group members will participate in the packaging of the toys. DRDO will take up the responsibility of planting saplings to meet the needs of the artisans. They are picking up trees from three places. The committee will coordinate with artisans to improve marketing opportunities for artisans and promote ancient crafts.

The artisans have confidence in their art for 400 years. Carving and painting aesthetically pleasing wooden toys of birds, animals, fruits and decorative objects. To make toys, they use the composite wood of the Ponik tree, scientifically known as Giautia rotary fromis. Open a special store in the center of Nirmal District to sell beautiful toys at affordable prices.

According to society members, the store now records sales of Rs 3,000 per day, whereas earlier the sales were between Rs 20,000 and Rs 30,000. Due to poor sales, artisans were forced to devote themselves to construction, carpentry and other lucrative occupations. Currently only about 100 artisans are dedicated to this profession, while 2,000 families have been crafting these toys for several decades.
