Pune: Candidates get NOCs despite property tax dues running into lakhs

Maharashtra: As campaigning for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections is in full swing, a major error has been revealed by the civic body’s tax department. Several candidates were issued No Objection Certificates (NOCs) despite having property tax dues amounting to lakhs of rupees. This revelation has raised serious questions about the functioning and accountability of the municipal administration.
According to sources, this discrepancy occurred within the jurisdiction of a specific ward office in the city. Official tax demand notices reveal that some candidates owe a total of ₹34,65,160 since 2017, spanning approximately eight years. Even after availing benefits under the Abhay Yojana, approximately ₹16,80,787 remains outstanding.
Despite the outstanding dues, the candidates filed their nomination papers for the municipal elections and were declared eligible during the verification process.
