Odisha cabinet approves road plan

Odisha: A major step has been taken towards improving urban transportation. The state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, approved the 9.5-kilometer Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan Road upgrade project on Wednesday. This decision was taken with the aim of modernizing and streamlining urban mobility in the state.

The cabinet approved the lowest turnkey bid for the project. The work has been awarded to Dineshchandra R. Agarwal Infracon Private Limited, which will complete it at a cost of ₹579 crore. The government believes that this project will significantly improve traffic flow in Bhubaneswar and surrounding areas.

This road project connects two major and busy areas of Bhubaneswar, which experience heavy daily traffic congestion. The proposed upgrade includes the section from Kalinga Stadium Gate No. 4 to Raghunathpur Bridge. The entire corridor will be developed in accordance with modern urban needs, ensuring smooth and safe traffic flow.

The project will also include the construction of flyovers at several key junctions, significantly reducing traffic congestion. Road width, drainage systems, and safety structures will also be upgraded to modern standards.

According to government officials, the project will strengthen urban transportation infrastructure and boost economic activity. The Jaydev Vihar and Nandankanan areas are among the fastest-growing areas of Bhubaneswar, with a steadily increasing population and vehicle traffic. Therefore, the expansion and modernization of this road was considered essential.

The project is targeted to be completed within 24 months. The government has clarified that strict monitoring of construction quality and timelines will be maintained to ensure the project is completed within the stipulated time. To this end, the relevant departments have been instructed to conduct regular monitoring.

Experts believe that the upgrade of this road will significantly reduce traffic congestion in Bhubaneswar and provide better connectivity to commuters. Additionally, access to the Nandankanan Zoo and surrounding tourist areas will become easier, boosting tourism activities.

The state government states that this project is not limited to road construction alone, but is part of a comprehensive urban development plan aimed at equipping Odisha’s capital region with modern infrastructure.

This road project will also focus on smart traffic management systems and special features for pedestrian safety. Plans are also being developed to maintain greenery and environmental balance along the roadside.

The government hopes that after completion, the project will increase traffic speeds in the area, save time, and reduce accidents. Furthermore, the project will play a significant role in the overall development of the city.

The construction agency has been instructed to commence work as soon as possible to complete the project within the stipulated 24-month deadline.
