Olive Ridleys visit Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Odisha
Kendrapara: The influx of turtles Marinas golfina into the marine sanctuary of Gahirmatha, known as the world’s largest colony of graylings, in Kendrapara district has marked the beginning of the annual mating rituals. Pradosh Moharana, forest officer, Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, said sea turtles usually start their mating activities in the sea near their favorite nesting shore in December.
In an effort to protect the breeding turtles, authorities imposed a fishing ban in the marine sanctuary from November 1 to May 31, covering a 20-km stretch off the coast of Gahirmatha.
Law enforcement measures have led to the arrest of 70 fishermen and four fishing boats for illegal activities in the marine sanctuary since 1 November. Last year, a fishing ban resulted in the protection of turtles, which included a remarkable figure of 5,12,175 turtles. Forest officer was also mentioned from 9 to 13 March 2023.
