Opposition MLAs create ruckus in Goa over Manipur issue, suspended for 2 days
Panaji (IANS). The Goa Legislative Assembly on Monday witnessed ruckus demanding a discussion on the Manipur issue, leading to suspension of seven opposition members from the proceedings of the House for two days.
The seven MLAs demanded a discussion on Manipur while waving placards reading ‘Save Manipur, Save India’. AAP MLA Cruz Silva had moved a private member’s motion to discuss the issue, but Chairman Ramesh Tavadkar rejected it. Angered by this, the opposition members came to the well and started raising slogans.
When Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) MLA Jeet Arlekar was speaking in the House, opposition members walked towards him with posters and prevented him from speaking. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant demanded immediate action against the opposition members and said it was not right to harass the MLA and snatch his papers and mike while he was speaking.
Sawant said, “He was stopped from all sides. This is very wrong. Action should be taken.
He said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is taking steps on the Manipur issue.
Sawant sought action under Rule 289 against the opposition MLAs, which was acted upon accordingly. MLA Jeet Arlekar also complained to the speaker that the MLAs misbehaved with him. He said, “I was pushed. My papers were taken away, it is an insult to the House.
When the opposition MLAs were in the Well, Speaker Ramesh Tavadkar tried to persuade them that they could demand a discussion on the Manipur issue on Friday, which is the private member’s day.
Tawadkar said, “Raise this issue on Friday. I will decide whether to give it or not. The Home Department (of Manipur) is handling the issue. You cannot raise this issue now… You can raise this issue during Private Members’ Day on Friday.
Opposition leader Yuri Alemao said during a press conference that Cruz Silva’s motion was listed in the House’s proceedings and then rejected.
“We wanted a discussion on the burning issue of Manipur, but the speaker did not allow it, on what grounds it was not allowed, while the matter was sub-judice, the motion against the ‘BBC documentary’ was passed,” Alemao asked. Permission was granted.
He said that the BJP government has no concern for the people of Manipur. Manipur wants moral support. The central government is not taking steps (to bring peace).
