Organ donation increased by 11.4 percent in the last one year
Chennai: Health Minister Ma Subramaniam paid tribute to the 27-year-old road accident victim from Saidapet who donated his organs.
The minister said that there has been an increase of 11.4 percent in organ donation compared to 2022. However, the waiting list of people waiting for various organs for transplant also remains high.
Till Saturday, 11 families have donated organs of brain dead people. As per the Chief Minister’s announcement in September 2023, organ donors were honored with state honours. The 27-year-old man met with an accident at Anna Salai four days ago and was taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital for treatment. Despite hospital treatment, he was responding well to his head injury and was declared brain dead on Friday.
He said that 61 people have voluntarily donated the organs of their family members after they were declared brain dead in 2023. “The number of organ donors in the state in 2023 was 178, which is the highest number of organ donors in the last few years. “The announcement of state honors has a major role in this direction,” he said.
During this, the minister said that the waiting list is also very high. 6,322 people need a kidney, 438 patients need a liver, 76 heart patients need a heart donor, 64 people need lungs, 25 people are waiting for both heart and lungs. About 27 people are waiting for hand transplants and many more are on the waiting list for small organs. A total of 7,031 people are waiting for organ donation.
