Coming to the story of this film, it is based on the life story of two childhood friends, Chandan Kumar (Vishal Jethwa) and Mohammad Shoaib (Ishaan Khattar). Both of them, who come from a rural background, yearn for a better life. They try to get out of the discrimination and poverty they face in society and try to get a police job with the aim of serving the country. Although only 3,500 out of 2.5 million applicants are selected in the police department, they dream of wearing a uniform and leading a respectable life.
Despite their different religious and social backgrounds, their friendship is strong. The practical-minded Chandan keeps the angry Mohammed out of trouble. However, their friendship is put to the test. While Chandan passes the exam, Mohammed fails. While Chandan eagerly awaits his job offer, Mohammed joins an electronics dealer and tries to earn the respect of his Hindu colleagues.
In 2020, the lives of these two young people are separated and reunited during the COVID-19 outbreak and the nationwide lockdown. During this journey, director Neeraj Ghaywan showcases many aspects of their friendship, hopes, disappointments, social inequalities, and personal struggles. The film sensitively and realistically depicts the struggles faced by people from lower castes to live a life of dignity and happiness. The role of Sudha Bharti, played by Janhvi Kapoor, is also crucial in the story.
