Pharmaceutical Research and Innovation Institute will be established in UP: Chief Minister

Lucknow (IANS) | Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath discussed the possibilities of development of the pharmaceutical sector in the state in a high-level meeting on Wednesday. In a special meeting, the Chief Minister laid emphasis on encouraging research in the pharma sector and gave necessary guidelines for setting up a new institute in the state.

He said that Uttar Pradesh is the 6th largest state in the country in terms of number of pharma manufacturing units, now our target is to become the leading state in the country. Similarly, our contribution in the pharma manufacturing ring in the country at present is 2 percent, which needs to be increased to 10-12 percent. There is great potential for growth in the pharmaceutical sector. Uttar Pradesh should take advantage of these possibilities. Along with drug manufacturing, we also have to focus on research.

He said that high level research institutes like IITR, CDRI, CIMAP and NBRI are functional in the state. While there are also academic institutions like SGPGI, KGMU. With planned efforts, Lucknow has emerged as a biopharma hub in the last few years. AKTU and other technical educational institutions are capable of providing human resources for the pharmaceutical sector. While the process of construction of Pharma Park is going on in the state, Medical Device Park is also to be constructed. Better use of this resource has to be made.

Yogi said that to encourage the pharmaceutical industry, we need to focus on all three areas, quality educational institutions, research labs and industry. In such a situation, Pharmaceutical Research and Innovation Institute should be established. This institute will basically focus on research and innovation, as well as act as a bridge between other institutes and industry related to the sector.

He said that a detailed action plan should be prepared regarding the nature of the Pharmaceutical Research and Innovation Institute. Prepare a panel of sector experts. Assess the future needs of the pharmaceutical sector and submit a detailed action plan within the next 15 days, studying best practices from around the world. Suitable land should be identified for this in the capital Lucknow. This institute will give a new identity to Uttar Pradesh in the field of pharmaceutical research and manufacturing on the national platform.
