Famous Tamil actor and founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (MamDK), Narayana Vijayaraja Alagar Swamy, popularly known as ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth, passed away at 9 am on Thursday, December 28, at a private hospital in Chennai due to ill health.
“Captain Vijayakanth received support after being admitted for pneumonia. Despite the full strength of the medical staff, he died on the morning of 28 December 2023,” a medical document from a private hospital said.
The 71-year-old man was undergoing treatment for severe obesity and cough. On the night of 26 December, he was taken to a private hospital. They were tested for COVID-19 and given alternative support.
He was last seen in public on 18 December when he presided over the 18th General Council meeting.
His wife Premlata passed away due to the decline in his health following the death of his wife Premlata, the party’s candidate in the GC meeting.
Vijayakanth’s health has been a matter of concern since 2016. In 2017, Vijayakanth traveled to Singapore for medical treatment. In 2020, he was hospitalized due to COVID-19, and again briefly in May 2021. He also underwent an amputation procedure in 2020.
