PM presents Odisha Ikat handloom to Indonesian Parliament Speaker Puan Maharani

Odisha: During his visit to Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Odisha’s renowned Ikat handloom to Puan Maharani, Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament. This gift is considered a symbol of India’s rich handicraft tradition, the hard work of artisans, and cultural heritage. Odisha Ikat is renowned worldwide for its unique weaving technique, attractive designs, and traditional significance.

Odisha Ikat, also known locally as “Bandha,” is one of the state’s most prominent handloom silk traditions. In this art, threads are first tied and dyed, and then used for weaving. This process is extremely difficult and time-consuming, requiring special skill and patience on the part of the artisans.

The uniqueness of Ikat is that the designs are created on the threads before the fabric is woven. The artisans tie sections of the threads and dye them different colors. When these threads are then woven on the loom, beautiful and intricate patterns emerge on the fabric.

This traditional technique gives Odisha Ikat fabrics their distinctive texture and attractive designs. One of its most distinctive features is that the patterns appear almost identical on both sides of the fabric. Furthermore, its soft texture and curved designs distinguish it from other fabrics.

The art of Odisha Ikat primarily developed in the state’s major weaving centers, such as Sambalpur, Nuapatna, and Bargarh. Thousands of weavers in these regions have carried forward this tradition for generations. Their intricate handwork and creativity have earned it national and international recognition.

Also known as Sambalpuri Ikat, this textile is an integral part of Odisha’s cultural identity. The colors, designs, and patterns used in it are often inspired by local life, nature, religious traditions, and folk tales. This is why it is considered not just a fabric, but also a medium reflecting the region’s culture and history.

Odisha Ikat designs traditionally incorporate flowers, animals, birds, geometric shapes, and other cultural symbols. Each design has a story and local tradition behind it. Weavers keep generations of heritage alive through their art.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gift of this special handmade textile to a foreign leader is also seen as linked to India’s “Vocal for Local” initiative and its efforts to promote Indian art on the global stage. India is continuously striving to gain international recognition for its traditional arts and handicrafts.

Odisha Ikat has previously received recognition at several national and international forums. Its demand is growing both in India and abroad. This traditional art is also being used in modern garments and products in the world of fashion and design.

For weavers, this art is not just a source of employment, but a part of their identity and pride. Many families have been engaged in this work for generations and continue this tradition through their hard work.

Experts believe that through such gifts, India also strengthens its cultural diplomacy. When Indian handicrafts are presented to global leaders, it gives new recognition to the country’s art, culture, and local artisans.

Prime Minister Modi’s gift of Odisha Ikat to Indonesian Parliament Speaker Puan Maharani is considered an important step in this direction. This gift also reflects the cultural ties between India and Indonesia.

With its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and traditional techniques, Odisha Ikat will remain a treasured heritage for generations to come. It is a living example of the talent of Indian artisans and a centuries-old art tradition.
