PMK functionary killed in Tamil Nadu, one suspect held
Chennai (IANS) Tension prevailed in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu area on Sunday following the killing of a local Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader.
The deceased was identified as Nagaraj (47), the city secretary of PMK in Chengalpattu and a local flower trader. Police said a gang of nine people came on two-wheelers on Sunday night and stabbed the PMK leader to death. At that time he was returning home after closing his shop.
Relatives and PMK functionaries protested on the Grand Southern Trunk Road and refused to accept the body. The protesters also raised slogans demanding justice from the state police.
Special police teams are on the lookout for the culprits and one of the attackers was arrested from near Paranur town plaza in the early hours of Monday. Police sources told IANS that when the police surrounded the assailant, he tried to attack them and the police had to fire at his legs and he was taken into custody.
The suspect has been identified as Ajay (24), who has eight criminal cases pending against him, including two murder charges. Police said that some more suspects are in their custody.
Chengalpattu Superintendent of Police, V.V. Sai Praneeth and Kanchipuram’s Deputy Inspector General of Police, P. Pakalavan are leading the police operation.
