Poison in children’s medicine: ‘Almont Kid’ cold medicine banned
Tamil Nadu: The Directorate of Drug Control has banned the use and sale of the children’s cold medicine “Almond Kit.” They claim it contains toxic chemicals. A public warning notice has been issued regarding this.
It is also advised to immediately report any cases of sale or use of the medicine. Medicines containing the molecules “Levocetirizine dihydrochloride” and “Montelukast sodium” are used for colds, allergies, and asthma. Medicines containing this combination are manufactured by several major companies.
Similarly, Tridus Redis, a Bihar-based company, was selling a children’s medicine called “Almond Kit.” Propylene glycol is commonly used as a solvent in liquid medicines. However, it was found that “Almond Kit” contained diethylene glycol.
This is a chemical used to liquefy resins, oils, paints, and inks. Taking medication containing this chemical can cause kidney failure and even death.
In light of this, the Directorate of Drug Control has advised retailers, pharmacies, drug distributors, and hospitals not to sell this medication. They have also asked them to immediately report any such sale.
Public Health Department officials have stated that a thorough investigation is underway and that they can contact the WhatsApp number 9445865400 for information or complaints related to the medication.
It is noteworthy that the governments of Telangana and Puducherry have already banned the “Almont Kit” medication. A few months ago, the deaths of 22 children in Madhya Pradesh after consuming the cough medicine “Coldrif” mixed with diethylene glycol caused a major uproar. Now, a similar effect has been found in another medication, posing a threat to society.
