Police opened fire on the accused in temple burning case
Guwahati : On Sunday, an accused tried to escape from the police in Ratbari area of Assam. During this, the accused got seriously injured due to bullet injury in the police firing. An accused named Anwar Ali, who allegedly burnt a 19th century temple in Karimganj, Assam, was arrested by the police from Ratbari area on Saturday.
A senior officer said that after his arrest, Ali was in a police van on the way to Ratbari police station. However, the accused requested the policemen to urinate. Meanwhile, the accused tried to escape from the spot by snatching the gun from a policeman. Police said that even after several warnings, the accused was not ready to put down his gun. He was later shot in the leg by security personnel and arrested.
Ali has been admitted to the local hospital, where his treatment is ongoing. Police said that the condition of the accused is stable. Karimganj Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das said that during preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed to his involvement in burning a 19th-century temple in Damcherra Tripura Punji neighborhood due to personal vendetta. A 200-year-old temple in Damcherra Tripura Punji area of Karimganj district was burnt to ashes on November 6, sparking tension among the local people. Police claimed that Ali had some dispute with a neighboring family and wanted to blame them for burning the temple. Further investigation is ongoing in the matter.
