Police rescues kidnapped student, 8 suspects arrested
Guwahati: Manipur Police rescued a student safely and arrested eight people, suspected to be cadres of an underground group, during an operation at Yumnam Huidrome in Imphal West. A police officer said that the arrested people allegedly kidnapped the student. Police also recovered three weapons from them. For the student’s safe release, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 15 lakh from his family and threatened that if the demand was not met, the student would be returned as a dead body. The SP said that on receiving the complaint, all the teams of Imphal West District Police immediately swung into action and conducted raids at various places around 2 am in the night. He said the police conducted an operation at Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leekai under Wangoi police station.
The SP said that during the raid, the police recovered the missing youth from the house of Asem Chaoba (63) and later rescued him. He said eight suspected kidnappers seen in two vehicles in the area were also arrested. , Three weapons, including one lethal rifle, one AK-47 assault rifle and one .32 pistol with one magazine and bullets, 13 mobile handsets, one samurai (sword) and two cars were recovered from their possession, the SP said.
SP Shivakant said that during preliminary interrogation, it was revealed that the kidnappers belonged to the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and the People’s War Group (PWG) and were working under Laminaba Khuman.
