President Droupadi Murmu arrives in New Delhi after concluding historic three-nation European visit
New Delhi [India], July 26: President Droupadi Murmu returned to New Delhi on Sunday after concluding her historic visit to three Eastern European nations.
Upon her arrival, Rashtrapati Bhavan stated in a post on X, “President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Delhi after completing her state visits to Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania.” The President concluded these significant visits on Saturday. During the tour, key diplomatic breakthroughs were achieved with Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania, substantially strengthening bilateral ties in sectors such as trade, defense, tourism, and the economy.
Several historic milestones were achieved during this diplomatic tour. Murmu became the first Indian Head of State to visit both Moldova and North Macedonia. Her visit to Romania marked the first time an Indian President had visited the Eastern European nation in over three decades.
During the final leg of the tour—the visit to Romania, which began on July 23—New Delhi and Bucharest agreed to double their trade volume over the next three years and deepen cooperation in defense and related strategic sectors. President Murmu held comprehensive talks on bilateral relations with Romanian President Nicușor Dan and also held separate discussions with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. On Friday, she addressed the India-Romania Business Forum in Bucharest and interacted with members of the India-Romania Parliamentary Friendship Group.
In recognition of her public leadership and international efforts, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies conferred an honorary doctorate upon President Murmu. The “Doctor Honoris Causa” is the institution’s highest academic honor, awarded to distinguished figures for exceptional contributions to education, public service, and international cooperation.
Before departing for the airport on Saturday, President Murmu met with members of the Indian community. Currently, more than 13,500 Indian citizens reside in Romania, including approximately 10,000 workers.
Earlier, during her visit to North Macedonia from July 21 to 22, President Murmu held bilateral discussions with President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, followed by delegation-level talks. Both nations pledged to double bilateral trade figures and identified joint opportunities in tourism, hospitality, and film production.
During her stay in Skopje, Murmu addressed the Assembly of North Macedonia and presided over the inaugural session of the India-North Macedonia Business Forum. The European tour began on July 20 in Moldova, where President Murmu held extensive talks with Moldovan President Maia Sandu and discussed all aspects of cooperation between the two countries.
