Presidential election to be held in Sri Lanka on September 21
Colombo Colombo: The Election Commission of Sri Lanka announced that the presidential election in the country will be held on September 21. The Election Commission has declared August 15 as the date for nomination of candidates for the presidential election. The Election Commission said that according to the Constitution of the country, the term of the President ends on November 17, 2024.
Not only this, voting for the presidential election can be done only between about one month and a maximum of two months from the end of the term of the current President. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who won the presidential election in November 2019, resigned from his post in July 2022 amid a serious economic crisis in the South Asian country. Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected President in the elections held in Parliament after Rajapaksa’s resignation.
