Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the association meeting, Pandian said, farmers in the state are facing many problems after DMK returned to power. He alleged that attacks on farmers are increasing day by day and the government is keen to hand over agricultural land to corporate companies.
Pointing out that the State Government had taken over agricultural land for Parandur Airport without any notice nor considering the recommendations of the Machhendranathan Committee constituted to study the issue and submit a report, he said. Referring to DMK’s promise of Rs 2,500 per quintal for paddy and Rs 4,000 per tonne for sugarcane in its election manifesto, he alleged that the ruling party cheated farmers on these two assurances after coming to power. “We demand that the government provide Rs 3,500 per quintal for paddy and Rs 5,000 per tonne for sugarcane. The government should also withdraw the Tamil Nadu Land Consolidation Act. With these demands, the farmers have decided to hold several protests from January 1 and the rally against the government will start from Thanjavur,” Pandian said.
