Punjab: Drug smuggler Tari taken into custody
Punjab: Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and Gurdaspur police have taken dreaded smuggler Avtar Singh Tari into preventive custody in a joint operation. Tari was detained by police and ANTF personnel from his native village Shahur Kalan under Kalanaur police station. “A significant breakthrough has been achieved by taking Tari into preventive custody under PIT-NDPS Act from the border district of Gurdaspur,” Punjab Police said in a statement. He has been sent to Bathinda Central Jail with two years’ custody. Senior officers claim that they were chasing the fugitive for the last several weeks. His arrest is being seen as a major success for the police operation to curb smuggling of heroin, fake currency notes, arms and ammunition coming from across the border. However, no contraband has been recovered from Tari. Officials are not revealing anything about the entire operation.
