Punjab: Indian-origin social media influencer Nancy Grewal murdered in Canada
Punjab: Nancy Grewal, a 45-year-old social media influencer of Punjabi origin, was stabbed to death in Canada. Her mother in Jalandhar on Thursday claimed she had been receiving death threats. Nancy was murdered late on March 3 in LaSalle, Ontario. On social media, Nancy expressed her views on various social and political issues in Punjab. She had spoken out against Khalistanis and also commented against pro-Khalistan leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. In a social media post, the LaSalle Police Service stated, “Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on March 3, emergency services received a report of a stabbing. A 45-year-old woman was found injured. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.”
Police later identified the victim as Nancy Grewal and said they were investigating the incident. It further stated, “To alleviate public concern, we are stating that investigators are treating this as an isolated incident,” and urged people to provide any information and video surveillance. Nancy was very active on social media and expressed her views on various social and political issues. In recent weeks, she also spoke out against Gurinder Singh Dhillon, head of the Radha Soami Satsang Beas, when he met Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in Nabha jail on February 2. Speaking to reporters in Jalandhar on Thursday, Nancy’s mother, Shinderpal Kaur, said her daughter was stabbed multiple times. She accused some extremists in Windsor, Canada, of harboring a grudge against her daughter.
Appealing to Canadian authorities to apprehend those behind the murder, Shinderpal Kaur said her daughter had been attacked before when her house was set on fire, but she had survived. “Nancy kept receiving threats,” she said. She claimed that a masked youth had even come to Nancy’s house to conduct a recce. “Nancy had installed CCTV cameras at her house. When he saw him, he got scared,” her mother said. “If there hadn’t been CCTV cameras, he could have killed Nancy at her home.” She said her daughter had gone to Canada in 2018. She had completed a nursing course and was working in two companies. Shindpal Kaur said she last spoke to Nancy on March 2. But her daughter didn’t pick up the phone on March 3, she said.
