Punjab: Jewellery and house mortgaged to raise money

Punjab: Family members of a man deported from the US have demanded strict action against the immigration agent who sent their son to the US through the ‘Dunki route’. Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Talania village, was among the 119 people who were deported back to India by the US on Saturday.

Speaking to The Tribune, Gurmeet’s father Chunni Lal said his son left for the US on November 12 last year for which the immigration agent charged him Rs 40 lakh, which he had borrowed from his relatives and moneylenders by mortgaging his jewellery and house.

Chunni Lal said he had dropped Gurmeet in New Delhi and did not know which route the travel agent took to take his son to the US before he was arrested by authorities there.
