Punjab: Video of youths with weapons goes viral, two arrested

Punjab: A day after Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar drew the government’s attention to a viral video of motorcycle-borne miscreants brandishing sharp-edged weapons, a case has been registered against 10 suspects at the City-1 police station here. The miscreants were planning to create disturbances in the elections of students’ unions of local colleges. But the college managements have not given consent to revive these associations, leading to rivalry.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohan Lal said they have come to know that some students of Waheguru College were seen brandishing weapons to scare people, which could lead to unrest in the city. He said some miscreants were trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere of the city and added that a case was registered in this regard last night. So far, eight out of the 10 miscreants have been identified and two of them, Rohit Midda of Sant Nagar and Rajbir Singh of Amargarh in Sri Ganganagar, have been arrested. The others include Bahman and Shindi of Jammu Basti, Karandeep Singh and Manpreet Singh of Nanak Nagri, Himanshu of Patel Nagar and Harman Dahuja of Anand Nagri. Police said they would be nabbed soon.

People recalled that on April 16, 2023, some miscreants opened fire outside Guru Nanak Khalsa College located on Abohar-Malout Road. Initial investigation indicated that some goons were hired to gain control of the college’s students’ union. Most of the suspects with criminal background were hired. Three suspects were arrested within 24 hours. As the elections are held in colleges after the Punjab University Students Council elections, bike riders created a ruckus by brandishing weapons on Gaushala Road and Abohar-Fazilka Road recently. Police posted a video on social media about the arrested suspects today and warned that no such act would be tolerated.
