Rally organized to encourage the use of green crackers

Mangaldai: The festival of lights is round the corner and hence there is a danger of a huge increase in pollution levels. One way to reduce this problem is the use of green crackers and this was encouraged by a rally in Mangaldai.

A massive rally was taken out in Mangaldai town on Friday to spread awareness about the ill effects of fireworks with an aim to promote the use of green crackers. The rally was organized under the initiative of Malagaldai Municipal Board. Hundreds of local women participated in the initiative as the rally passed through the city center to spread awareness among as many people as possible.

Many leaders including Mangaldoi Lok Sabha constituency MP Dilip Saikia, former Legislative Assembly member Gurujyoti Das, Mangaldoi Municipal Board Chairperson Nirmali Devi also participated in this rally. The rally was flagged off at the Municipality office as it started from LNB Road and returned back to the starting point.

The aim of the participants was to make the local people aware about the problems caused by loud fireworks. They also displayed placards highlighting its ill effects with messages like stop noise pollution, stop air pollution, use only green crackers and save environment.

Earlier, at a press conference held in Guwahati, Police Commissioner Diganta Barah urged residents to enjoy the festivities of Diwali and Kali Puja by strictly following the guidelines laid down by the administration. Barah stressed that disobedience to the laid down rules would be dealt with strictly. Expressing optimism about the enthusiastic celebration of festivals, Barah highlighted the importance of following the guidelines established by the Supreme Court and the Kamrup district administration. He specifically addressed the ban on firecrackers containing barium nitrate, allowing the use of only green crackers as defined by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).
