Reaction of hotel and restaurant associations to the Maharashtra FDA’s action
Mumbai. Amidst the crackdown by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on hotels, restaurants, and other food business operators for violating food safety standards, key industry associations have supported measures to strengthen food safety. However, expressing concern over the manner of enforcement, the associations stated that the process for ensuring compliance should balance consumer interests with providing food business operators a fair opportunity to rectify issues.
In a joint statement, the Hotel and Restaurant Association-Western India (HRAWI), the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), and the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association (AHAR) affirmed that food safety is the primary responsibility of every food business. They commended the FDA’s efforts to enforce food safety standards and ensure regulatory compliance. The associations emphasized that providing safe, high-quality food to customers is a top priority for the entire industry.
However, the associations also stressed that the enforcement process must be fair, transparent, and balanced. They expressed concern that food business operators should be given adequate opportunity to address shortcomings and take necessary corrective actions before any punitive measures are taken. They argued that a system based on improvement and rectification would be more effective than one relying solely on punitive action.
The associations noted that under food safety and standards regulations, Food Business Operators (FBOs) are typically given an opportunity to rectify deficiencies identified during inspections. The objective of this system is to encourage compliance and enhance the overall food safety framework.
HRAWI, NRAI, and AHAR urged that priority be given to consultation and corrective processes during inspections and enforcement actions. They stated that, wherever possible, food business operators should be allowed to address shortcomings and meet prescribed standards. This approach would foster better coordination between the industry and regulatory bodies.
The restaurant and hotel industry reiterated its commitment to fully complying with food safety regulations. The organizations stated that providing safe food is not merely a legal obligation but also an ethical responsibility towards customers. They further noted that the industry has consistently taken steps to train employees, improve hygiene standards, and implement food safety protocols.
According to the organizations, collaboration between regulatory bodies and businesses is essential to ensure compliance with food safety regulations. Providing an opportunity to rectify any shortcomings found in an establishment can yield better long-term results. They believe this approach would also assist small and medium-sized food businesses in aligning their operations with the regulations.
