Meanwhile, farmers in three procurement centers of Durg block staged a protest at the call of the Chhattisgarh Progressive Farmers’ Organization, demanding an increase in the paddy procurement limit and the issuance of sufficient tokens to farmers. A large number of farmers from Khada, Amti, Masabhat, and Albaras villages participated at the Albaras center; farmers from Masabhat, Amti, Ruda, and Nikum villages participated at the Nikum center; and farmers from Vinayakpur, Janjgiri, Chingri, and Anda villages participated at the Anda center.
The protesting farmers highlighted the slow pace of paddy procurement and the difficulties in obtaining tokens, stating that farmers selling paddy for the first time are facing numerous problems. They also alleged that despite government directives against it, labor charges are being collected from farmers at the procurement centers, taking unfair advantage of their helplessness. Addressing the farmers, the convener of the Chhattisgarh Progressive Farmers’ Organization, Advocate Rajkumar Gupta, said that the lack of unity among farmers has emboldened the government, which is making arbitrary decisions regarding paddy procurement and unnecessarily harassing the farmers. He urged the farmers to unite and fight for their rights. Manoj Mishra and Sumiran Gupta of the organization also appealed to the farmers to stand together.
