Renowned Mathematician Dr. Mangla J. narlikar passed away
Pune (IANS). Renowned mathematician Dr. Mangala J., suffering from cancer. Narlikar passed away in the early hours of Monday, a former colleague of his said.
Dr. Mangla J. Narlikar was 80 years old. She was fighting cancer for a long time. Her husband Dr. Jayant Narlikar is an eminent astrophysicist and cosmologist. They have three daughters Lilavati, Girija, and Geeta.
One of his former colleagues said that his last rites would be performed today itself.
Born in Mumbai on 17 May 1943, Narlikar topped the MA (Mathematics) stream of the University of Mumbai in 1964 and joined the School of Mathematics of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research as a researcher for two years.
She later went to the University of Cambridge and taught there till 1969. She returned to TIFR as a teacher until 1980 and in the meantime obtained her PhD in Mathematics from the University of Mumbai.
Dr. Narlikar was interested in real and complex analysis, analytical geometry, number theory, algebra and topology. He did research in pure mathematics.
Over the years he taught MSc students at University of Mumbai, University of Pune and Bhaskaracharya Pratishthan. Lectured in other institutions in India and abroad. Wrote research papers of many scholars on mathematics and also wrote two books on this subject.
She strongly supported the interest of women in science.
