Ruckus in Meghalaya Assembly over Governor’s speech in Hindi

Shillong (IANS) | Uproar broke out in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Monday after Governor Fagu Chauhan delivered a speech in Hindi on the first day of the budget session. Four members of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), including MLA Ardet Miller Basaivamoit, walked out of the House. Even though Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Speaker Thomas Sangma claimed that copies of the speech were given in Hindi, Basaivamoit argued that this was an inappropriate gesture as English is the official language of the House.

He said, the central government was hesitating to recognize Khasi and Garo languages and the Governor was speaking in Hindi in the House. Though the Speaker urged the members to allow the Governor to complete his speech, the four VPP MLAs walked out of the House shortly after.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “We may have differences of opinion, but this is not a good sign.”
