Security breach, spectator detained by Gujarat Police
Ahmedabad (ANI): Gujarat State Police on Sunday arrested an Australian spectator who supported Palestine and hugged Virat Kohli, violating security during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Took into custody.
The person has been brought to Chandkheda Police Station in Ahmedabad.
The man who breached security and entered the field during the India vs Australia final match said, “My name is John…I am from Australia. I had entered (the field) to meet Virat Kohli. I support Palestine…”
There was a security breach during the India vs Australia World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
In a massive security breach, a Palestinian supporter invaded the field and hugged Virat Kohli during the 14th over of India’s innings; However, the security personnel immediately removed them.
The Palestinian supporter was wearing a T-shirt with the slogan Free Palestine and a mask themed in the colors of the Palestinian flag as he invaded the field during the ongoing final match.
The Israel–Hamas war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel. Hamas fired at least 5,000 rockets from Gaza, killing about 1,400 Israelis. Hamas also took many Israeli soldiers and civilians hostage in the Gaza Strip.
Israel retaliated and declared war on Hamas the next day. The Israeli army began attacking the Palestinian territory.
Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bowl first in the World Cup final against India on Sunday amid a packed crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The Indian team remained unbeaten in the final after playing 10 games, chasing and defending the target in five matches.
Australia, on the other hand, bounced back from losing two games at the start of the tournament by winning eight consecutive matches to reach the finals.
India will be looking to win their third World Cup title, while Australia will be aiming to clinch their sixth trophy.
