Shrine Empire Gallery to present Chris Basumatary’s first solo exhibition from April 12
New Delhi: The Shrine Empire Gallery here will present Chris Basumatary’s first solo exhibition titled ‘There is a lot of poetry inside me, but it is in the wrong language’ from April 12 to May 11. Basumatary, who grew up next to a small river (Chhota Rangit) near Darjeeling in West Bengal, has developed a close relationship with water. For Basumatary, art is a medium to talk about the complexities of cross-identity through the concepts of water, stone and flesh.

By transforming cement and concrete into water and paint into flesh, Basumatari presents a conversation between the materiality of materials and the transformative potential they contain. Women’s Voices: A Celebration of Contemporary Art by Emerging Women Artists “The artist’s intimate and personal works speak to the broader politics of visibility and those that silently testify to the violence at the margins of society. They also place them on the path of artists in India and elsewhere who address the uncertainty of intersectional identities,” said Srinivas Aditya Mopidevi, curator of the exhibition. Shefali Somani and Anahita Taneja, co-directors of Shrine Empire, said, “Basumatari’s artistic language embodies a poetic and delicate quality that attracted us to his work. His abstract forms hide and conceal narratives of pain and suffering. I feel strongly that his work connects to the ongoing vision of the Shrine Empire, and we are excited to host his first solo exhibition at the gallery.
